The conclusion of the First World War left many veterans disillusioned with their service. Experiencing what world-renowned sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois termed double-consciousness, several soldiers returned to the United States determined to assert their independence. These collective efforts resulted in the creation of several Black Nationalist groups and the northward movement of African Americans in the Great Migration. Disturbed by their claims to agency, white racists violently confronted recently returned veterans resulting in the Red Summer of 1919. After a tumultuous interwar year period, African Americans again heeded the call to fight in World War II, despite the injustices experienced on the homefront. African American men fought for the first time as Marines and Airmen. However, discrimination remained persistent as the men and women continued to fight in segregated units. Their meritorious service juxtaposed by their inhumane treatment on the homefront forced President Harry S. Truman to integrate the United States armed forces in 1948. African Americans have participated in the United States Armed Forces since the Revolutionary War. While doing so they endured not only the troubles of engaging an external enemy but also the harsh realities of racism and segregation. Still, in times of war, African Americans were expected to serve their country faithfully, despite not having the same rights as their white counterparts. After both wars, many veterans returned home to be beaten, humiliated, and lynched (often still in uniform). All the while still being denied the rights of full citizenship. Refusing to submit to Jim Crow America, veterans used their organizational skills and began to coordinate an attack on segregation in America. This is the first episode in a series that chronicles the postwar radicalization of African American World War veterans for civil rights.
